Abstract

Waste pickers play an essential role in the circular economy, working directly in the sorting and separation of waste materials. However, this activity is carried out under adverse conditions, with limited infrastructure, low social recognition, and a lack of technologies that facilitate the work.

Our project seeks to introduce a low-cost, portable, and easy-to-use metal detector capable of helping waste pickers identify and separate metals more quickly, safely, and efficiently. This technology can increase workers’ income, reduce the waste of valuable materials, and strengthen recycling in the municipality of Sorocaba.
